Types of Composite and Wood-Like Decking

A plethora of composite and wood-like decking choices are on the market. These alternatives can look quite similar to traditional wooden decks, but offer much lower maintenance requirements and a longer lifespan. In fact, with proper care and upkeep, some of these alternatives can even out-perform wood in terms of longevity.

However, some of these alternatives have a less sustainable profile than others. The most common types of alternative decking are capped composite and cellular PVC. Capped composite is designed to look like natural wood, and a range of color options are available. Unfortunately, the process of manufacturing capped composite uses a significant amount of non-renewable resources and requires fossil fuels to produce. Cellular PVC is made from recycled materials and has a more sustainable footprint.

While both capped and cellular PVC can have a wood-like appearance, the best options on the market are engineered to look like real wood with features such as smaller gaps between deck boards, hidden fasteners, and realistic nature-inspired surface textures and grain patterns. Sherwood’s LANAI Premium PVC decking is one such example. It is a high-quality product that is not only designed to look like wood but is also resistant to fading and staining.

Both capped and cellular PVC are incredibly durable and can stand up to the heat and humidity of a Midwestern summer. They are also not susceptible to the swelling and shrinking that can plague a wooden deck, but they can still benefit from a regular pressure wash to get rid of debris from storms or the kids going wild with their crayons. Another great advantage of a pvc deck is that it is impermeable, meaning moisture cannot seep through and cause damage. This also helps prevent termite infestations and means that bare feet or pets can safely enjoy the deck without worrying about splinters.
