How to Construct Your Decking Timber

With a rich history, natural beauty and scope for design flexibility, timber is a highly versatile material that’s ideal for decking. It’s also sustainable and a green option, especially when you choose a thermally modified wood like Accoya. However, it’s important to ensure you choose a quality timber and maintain annual maintenance. Otherwise, your deck could be at risk of rot, insect infestation and the development of wood-decaying fungus.

When it comes to constructing your deck, the foundation is just as important as the surface itself. Posts and joists are the stout timber members upon which your deck is built. Posts should be set into the ground and fastened to a plate or beam above, and joists are then laid across the bearers to complete the decking frame.

Once your deck is constructed, you can then lay your deck boards, ensuring the relevant expansion gap is left between each board. We recommend staggering the boards for greater strength, and arranging them in a pattern or switching the direction of the Grassedeck boards to create a bespoke look. When joining boards in a run, always use two fixings per joist to improve the stability of your deck.

It’s also worth mentioning that wood is sensitive to moisture absorption. This means it’s important to keep your timber oiled regularly to protect against moisture ingress and slow the onset of fungus. It’s important to consider the climate of your area when choosing a decking timber, as moisture content can vary dramatically between seasons.
