Treated Pine Decking

Whether you’re building a deck, verandah, pergola, gazebo or retaining wall, treated pine is one of the most economical and flexible materials available. However, it’s not as durable as hardwood. The good news is that it can be painted or stained to look like a wide variety of other timbers.

Treated pine, or radiata pine as it’s also known, is a cheap, sustainable, and versatile timber used in all types of outdoor construction projects. It is a softwood, so it expands and contracts more than hardwoods, but this means that it’s easier to cut and shape. It is also easy to stain, which gives a premium finish.

It is important to understand that wood is graded for durability, and the two most common classifications are H3 and H4. The H3 treated pine is suitable for above ground use only, while the H4 is suitable for decking boards which will come into contact with the ground. If you’re using H3 treated pine for your deck, then you’ll need to use a fungicide which will keep it protected from termites.

Spotted gum, or jarrah, is another popular option for decking. It’s a plantation grown timber, and as such is a more environmentally conscious choice than some other native timbers. It’s also a dense timber that shrinks very little, and it doesn’t “bleed” like some other native timbers. It’s a great choice for bushfire prone areas, as it has a fire rating of BAL 29.
